Schreiber Returns! Part I: Canada, the Trojan Horse

Karlheinz Schreiber returned to the Commons Ethics committee on Tuesday--avec ses notes! As with last Thursday's proceedings, the following is NOT a transcript, so quote at your own risk ;) Time-stamps are approximate.

Canada, the Trojan Horse

11:10 AM
Szabo (chair, LPC): (calls the committee to order) Last week, this committee passed a motion--the Standing committee reviewed all new evidence (not available at the time of the settlement with Mr. Mulroney) and the handling of the allegations in the Privy Council's office and PMO, and it was moved that Mr. Schreiber should appear w/o delay and that the cmte would report to the House of Commons.
Szabo (chair, LPC): Mr. Auger is accompanying Mr. Schreiber again today (Schreiber's counsel). Mr. Schreiber, you're still under oath; we have received a large number of faxes, emails etc expressing disgust at our failure to ensure your dignity; subjected you to ridicule, "shaming of one Canadian has shamed all Canadians," and for this we are sorry (referring to the rough transfer of Mr. S from the detention centre). We will take steps to ensure that such a spectacle never happens again.
Szabo (chair, LPC): Last Friday, one of your legal reps characterized this hearing as "a political circus" (Greenspan?). We are all honourable members of parliament--through Sec 108 of the standing orders of parliament--we take our responsibilities seriously and vow to treat witnesses with respect, guided by practices of the British Parliamentary system of government. We have a duty to respond to the matter before us without "dissection" of lawyers. This committee is about promoting freedom of speech.
Szabo (chair, LPC): Mr. Schreiber, when you were here last Thursday, you did not have access to your papers; I was aware of the stay granted to you by the Court last Friday. Had that NOT occurred, however, you might have been extradited by Saturday. As chairman, in my view, adjourning on Thursday without asking you any questions would not have been right. This committee has asked why the Speaker's Warrant wasn't enforced in time for last Thursday's hearing. Mr. Schreiber, you've expressed willingness to get your views on the public record. Now is the time to begin. It is likely true that questions posed to you today may not cover all of the points that you will want to cover. I invite you to make any statements you want. Do you have an opening statement?

Schreiber: Yes, I do. I am deeply impressed and touched by your words. Good morning, Mr. Chairman, and committee members. I think that this cmte might be important for each and every Canadian. All of you may be proud one day--I believe this may be an historic cmte.
I like your idea--your aim to lead this to a full public inquiry b/c this cmte does not have all the tools an inquiry will have. Watch carefully: you can't fight wrong doing by running away. The value of a country is not decided by running away (??). "I believe I am a pretty good Canadian." I have a problem this morning...maybe it's my detention...I'm a grandpa, I have a little emotional problem this morning..." (tearing up)
Schreiber: On Friday, after 9 years, the Crown consented to my bail. This cmte has probably protected me, just like the Boss from the Detention Centre (Ottawa) did when the RCMP tried to kidnap me. So, I'm grateful to this cmte. It was torture (not to talk last week) and I have personally apologized to all cmte members. I especially regret that Mr. Thibault can't make it here today. He is stuck shovelling snow. I don't want to be too long, but I want to bring your attention to the Detention Centre in Ottawa and in Toronto. I am going to go after the RCMP for attempted kidnapping (aside: is there anyone KHS is NOT suing?). I want to thank the friendly and "great guys" in the Ottawa Detention Centre who brought me my papers. In Toronto, the inmates also got to know who I am from TV--criminals!--when they learned what happened, they said, "don't worry: when you get out, you'll have 25 bodyguards to protect you!" I would like to come right away, now to my prepared statement.
Schreiber: Starting with the most important thing: all about what happened with the government, Mr. Mulroney and the money. For example, you've asked for the Letter of Request regarding Airbus, Bear Head and the helicopters (Coast Guard). Let me show you something that has not been known/discussed so far: I have brought key documents of the whole affair.
Schreiber: First of all, the most spectacular thing, the "Airbus affair." The whole event was an international war between Europe and the USA; you've seen in media what important attention is paid by the USA when Airbus tried to start doing business on the North American continent? Well, the Americans involved everbody: FBI, CIA, everybody. The problem with Airbus planes was...Airbus could not fly across the Atlantic or across water; only 2 engines, therefore the planes could only travel 90 km from shore. For Airbus to survive, they needed to create business where aircrafts could fly over soil--USA mainly. So...Canada was more or less used as a "Trojan Horse" to break into the USA. From a European perspective, there was a monopoly in the USA for both military and civilian "sky" (hastens to add that he's not criticizing USA--they have to look after their interests).
Schreiber: Involved in the whole attempt to break into the North American market was Premier Strauss of Bavaria. He was also the chairman of MBB, which in turn had shareholdings in Airbus. Francois Mitterand (France) had the same interests in breaking into North American airspace, even though he was an avowed socialist and Strauss was a hard-right conservative. Mitterand visited Brian Mulroney while they were both leaders and spoke to BM about the Airbus problem.
