Speech from the Throne: Part V

Tonight, Her Excellency, the Right Honourable Michaƫlle Jean opened the 2nd Session of the 39th Parliament of Canada. The following is NOT a transcript, but my rather frenzied notes on the Throne Speech. The notes begin here, in Part I. A reminder for non-Canadians: this speech was written by our Conservative Prime Minister, Stephen Harper.

...Part V

Taking a Bite Oot of Crime

  • "Canada was founded on the principles of 'Peace, Order, and Good Government,'" and yet Canadians feel "less safe and secure"
  • Guv has proposed legislation to tackle violent crime but the Opposition has obstructed; Guv will reintroduce proposals in one, large "Omnibus" crime bill: bill will particularly address "violent criminals, age of protection, impaired driving, dangerous offenders...prison sentences"
  • Guv will strengthen "Youth Criminal Justice Act," specifically viz drugs/youth/property crime to "steer youth away from a life of crime"
  • Concerned about auto theft, elder abuse, identity theft
  • Proposed "National Anti-Drug Strategy" (=failed US-style "War on Drugs")
  • Enhanced victim and community supports
  • Guv will ask for a repeal of the "wasteful long-gun registry"
  • Will add 2500 new police officers
National Security & Terrorism

  • public Air India inquiry will provide important advice for future strategy (like King Steve will srsly wait to do whatever he wants)
  • Guv will issue a statement on "National Security" soon
  • Strengthen "Anti-terrorism Act" and "respond to the Supreme Court's decision on Security Certificates" (Noooooo! This is very, very bad! I am deeply ashamed that Canada ever so much as entertained these things. They're blights on our record).
